I am not African American. But I have curly hair. The best conditioner I have ever used to tame my hair is Biolage conditioning balm for extra dry hair. I got a large bottle a rather long time ago (you don't have to use much) and now it appears that they have changed the names of the conditioner types. My guess is that it is the ultra-hydrating balm on this page.

I don't have African American hair but I do have curly hair and I use Garnier Fructis Curl and Shine Leave-In Conditioner Cream, you just put it on and you don't have to wash it off, but I recommend using the Curl and Shine Shampoo and Conditioner too cause all three of them work to give you frizz-free curls.
