I am a hairstylist! Dont do over the counter brands. they are full of ammonia even the semipermanent ones. they will fry your hair more then it already is. If you cant afford to go to a salon. go to a beauty supply store and get a great conditioning treatment and use 3 times in one week to prepare it for the color. then get a cellophane or a high shine color treatment. It wont lighten your hair but will deposit loads of shine and the color you want. it fades out in about 4 to 6 weeks but it is gentle and will help make your hair look healthier and more attractive. just ask the sales people for this.
