How do mosquitoes push their hair-thin proboscis through the thick hide of some animals?

They don't. A mosquito has to find tissue it can penetrate. They don't just land on an animal and start drilling. If you'll watch mosquito attempting to feed on your friends, you'll notice they seldom go to work at the first spot they land.

They get that thing really, really hard and find

a soft spot and dive in.
